About UsEdmonton North is one of the largest Primary Care Networks in the province; we currently have over 120 family physicians who work in north Edmonton and have chosen to become owners of our organization (physician participation is voluntary). The north of Edmonton sees a wide range of socioeconomic diversity. One end of the spectrum includes a highly affluent population in expensive downtown condos and new subdivisions in the north east, at the other end it includes the lowest-income neighbourhoods in the city, the largest concentration of new immigrants, the inner-city, and all of the challenges that tend to be more common with these factors. Family physicians in Edmonton North face significant challenges in their practice by servicing such a broad, and in many cases, disadvantaged population. Our family physicians work with persons with higher-than-average incidences of substance abuse, addictions, chronic disease and mental health issues. On top of all this, there are often communication and cultural issues due to the number of different ethnic groups that reside in this part of town and who contributed to the mosaic of our community. The delivery of service is compounded by a shortage of both family physicians and specialists. Although there is a need for more physicians throughout the province the shortage appears most acute in the north half of Edmonton in comparison to other parts of the city. Although the Edmonton North PCN contains over 40% of the population of the City of Edmonton, it only has only 29% of the primary care physicians. Our family physicians are working at, and beyond, capacity and need help to help provide more comprehensive care. We believe it takes a special type of family physician who seeks out to practice in our part of town and we are striving to be a special type of PCN to be able to support the tremendous work they are all doing.
