Did you know that the wait time to see some Orthopedic surgeons in Edmonton is nearly two years? That’s too long to wait if you are living with pain in your joints, muscles, ligaments or tendons. Whether you have a chronic condition like arthritis or you injured yourself playing sports or in everyday activities, this program is designed to evaluate your need for surgery versus alternative methods for relieving pain and improving your function.
In Edmonton, approximately 75% of patients who are referred to an Orthopedic Surgeon do not need surgery. At the Edmonton North PCN we are hoping that you don’t sit on a wait list unnecessarily, if you don’t need to see a surgeon.
Members of the Edmonton North PCN utilize the Ortho Triage & Treatment Program at the Northgate location. A team of family physicians and a physiotherapist with expertise and additional training in sports medicine will see patients for any orthopedic concern.
During your appointment, it will be determined whether or not you will need surgery from an Orthopedic Surgeon. If you do not need surgery, they will help you with treatment options, like physiotherapy, injections or seeing an Exercise Specialist at the PCN. Follow up may be required, which can be provided at the PCN, if appropriate.
If it is determined that you will need surgery, you will be provided with support while you are referred and waiting for an appointment.
This program does work with a number of Orthopedic Surgeons who will see patients once they have been seen by someone on the Ortho Triage team. Wait times to see a surgeon who is part of the program is around two months.
Please note this program is not able to accept patients with a WCB-related injury or illness.
Services at Northgate Centre require a referral from your family doctor, who is a member of the PCN.
